Key Highlights of NEP 2020
School Education
- Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE):
- Universal access to high-quality early childhood development, care, and education should be ensured by 2030.
- ECCE should be provided through a significantly expanded and strengthened system of early childhood education institutions.
- New Curricular Structure:
- The existing 10+2 structure will be replaced by a 5+3+3+4 structure, corresponding to the age groups of 3-8 years (foundational stage), 8-11 (elementary stage), 11-14 (middle stage) and 14-18 (secondary stage).
- Holistic and Multidisciplinary Education:
- Emphasis on the holistic development of students through a curriculum that integrates academics, vocational education, sports, arts, and life skills.
- Focus on developing critical thinking, creativity, scientific temper, and digital literacy.
- Reduction in Curriculum Content:
- The curriculum content should be limited to the core essentials to make space for critical thinking and more holistic, inquiry-based, discovery-based, discussion-based, and analysis-based education.
- Mother Tongue/Regional Language as Medium of Instruction:
- As far as possible, the medium of instruction should be home language/mother tongue/local language/regional language at least till Class 5, but preferably up to Class 8 and beyond.
- Assessment Reforms:
- Move from summative assessment to more competency-based regular assessment that tests higher-level skills, such as analysis, critical thinking, and conceptual clarity.
Higher Education
- Multidisciplinary Education and Research Universities (MERUs):
- Establishment of MERUs at par with IITs, IIMs, etc., as models of best multidisciplinary education of global standards.
- Holistic and Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Education:
- Flexibility of subjects with multiple exit options, and an Academic Bank of Credits to store and transfer credits.
- Increased Focus on Vocational Education:
- Aim to make vocational education a part of mainstream education, with at least 50% of learners exposed to vocational education by 2025.
- National Research Foundation (NRF):
- An apex body to foster a strong research culture and build research capacity across higher education.
- Regulation:
- Higher Education Commission of India (HECI) to be set up as a single overarching umbrella body for the entire higher education, excluding medical and legal education.
- Teacher Education:
- Starting in 2030, a 4-year integrated B.Ed. degree will be the minimum qualification for teaching.
Use of Technology and Digital Education
- National Educational Technology Forum (NETF):
- To provide a forum for free exchange of ideas on the use of technology to enhance teaching, assessment, planning and administration.
- Digital Infrastructure:
- Expansion of digital infrastructure to ensure equitable access to education through the use of technology.
- Online and Digital Education:
- Development of a digital repository of content, learning resources, and improved digital literacy and skills.
Equity and Inclusion
- Equitable Access to Education:
- Special emphasis on Socially and Economically Disadvantaged Groups (SEDGs) to ensure they have access to education at all levels.
- Gender Inclusion Fund:
- Enhancing the nation’s ability to provide affordable and high-quality education to both girls and transgender persons.
- Education of Gifted Children:
- Identification and nurturing of the unique capabilities of gifted and talented students.
Implementation
